Vis Island
Location
Central Dalmatia
Location
Central Dalmatia
Vis lies farther out in the Adriatic than most central Dalmatian islands, which gives it a noticeably different atmosphere. For decades it was closed to foreign visitors as a military base, and that isolation helped preserve its villages, architecture, and slower pace of life.
Arriving by yacht, the coastline feels wider and more open. Steep hills rise directly from the sea, small stone settlements sit low along the shore, and the water appears deeper blue than islands closer to the mainland.

Where You’ll Spend Time
Most yachts dock in Vis Town harbor or anchor in the wide bay facing the town. The waterfront is lined with palm trees and stone houses, with restaurants stretching along the promenade.
On the western side of the island lies Komiža, a smaller fishing village backed by Mount Hum. Komiža feels more traditional and compact, with colorful boats pulled onto the shore and a simple harbor square.
For swimming stops, coves like Stiniva Bay and the nearby Blue Cave on Biševo Island are among the most visited spots.
Things to Do
Visit Stiniva Bay
Stiniva is one of Croatia’s most recognizable beaches.
Here you’ll find:
A narrow entrance opening into a sheltered cove
High cliffs surrounding a small pebble beach
Calm water once inside the bay
A dramatic arrival by tender
It’s best visited earlier in the day before tour boats arrive.
Explore Komiža
Komiža has a strong maritime character.
Within the village you’ll find:
Stone houses lining a compact harbor
Fishing boats and nets along the quay
A small waterfront promenade
Simple cafés and local restaurants
It’s quieter and more traditional than Vis Town.
Discover the Blue Cave
Located on nearby Biševo Island, the Blue Cave is known for the way sunlight reflects through an underwater opening, illuminating the interior with bright blue light.
Visits are organized through small local boats and are weather dependent.
